Who Has Access To Your Credit Report?

Who Has Access To Your Credit Report?
In the past, banks and others who are reviewing applications for loans, mortgages and lines of credit were generally the only people looking at your credit report. Today, businesses are increasingly using credit reports to help them make decisions about how responsible you are with money.

For example, landlords typically check your credit report during the rental application process. Some prospective employers may also look at your credit report before you are hired. (However, employers must obtain written permission from you before they can receive a copy and must give you a copy before taking any adverse action based on the report.)

Can anyone see my credit report? The answer is no.

Only organizations with legitimate business reasons to review your credit-worthiness can legally obtain your credit report. Credit bureaus are required to list anyone who has reviewed your report. See "Inquiries" on your credit report to review this list.

Examples of those who can see your report?

  • A business that may extend credit to you
  • A potential employer
  • An insurance company that may issue a policy
  • A government agency providing government benefits to you
